Murmansk, October 6, Interfax – The first mosque in the Polar region will be built in Murmansk, the city’s Mayor Mikhail Savchenko told a briefing.
A land plot for the mosque has already been provided, he said.
Various ethnic communities came up with an initiative to build a mosque in Murmansk, which is home to 20,000 Muslims. However, the local authorities rejected the designs previously proposed for the building. The regional authorities and the Orthodox community criticized the idea of building a mosque that would soar higher into the sky than Murmansk’s central church.
“All disputes have been settled,” Savchenko said. “I am sure that the residents of our multi-ethnic city will support the idea of building a mosque,” the mayor said.
