Man dies after gang fight

Filed under: Multi Kulti, UK — limewoody @ 8:48 am

A man has died after being stabbed during a gang fight involving white and Asian men on the Callon estate in Preston.

The incident at 12.45am on Saturday morning saw 40 youths fighting with knives, bottles and baseball bats.

The 20-year-old man, who has not been formally identified, was involved in the incident at Samuel Street, off Fishwick Parade, and died later of his stab wounds.

He is believed to be a former student of Hutton Grammar School.

Police are urgently appealing for information and appeals for calm are being made.

Supt Richard Bayly, from Lancashire Police, said: “We are treating this as a very serious incident and are working with the local community to reassure them and they are helping with us in our inquiries.

“A number of people have been arrested and there were a number of people near the incident who we want to come forward.”

According to residents, the dead man’s sister got married last week.

Sohail Nawaz, the vice chairman of an independent police advisory group on the Preston community, said it was too early to say if the death was racially motivated.

He said: “The investigation is ongoing and there is very little we know at the moment.

“This is a very highly-charged situation and we are appealing to all members of the Callon community to be calm at this very emotional time.

“My heartfelt condolences go out to the friends and family of the deceased and anyone with information should come forward and help with the inquiry.”

He said police were aware of the importance of releasing the body of the man as soon as possible, but he accepted a post-mortem would have to take place.

A number of arrests have been made and a cordon has been put around the scene and the road was closed off at the junction of New Hall Lane.

A mother-of-two who witnessed the attack described how police and paramedics had to fight through the battle to get to the dying man.

She said: “There was no life in him whatsoever.

“He just bled to death but everyone was standing around him still screaming, crying and fighting.

“Even when the police were here they were fighting.

“There were so many people around they couldn’t get through to the guy on the floor.

“The estate was packed full of people fighting.

“I didn’t see the lad getting stabbed but I saw everything else.

“Police were pushing people about and moving everyone off the street.

“Someone said it was over drugs and about bikes ridden on the estate – it’s ridiculous.

“I have got two young kids and this happens every year.”

A man in his early 20s from the Callon area said there were “far too many” disturbances on Fishwick Parade.

He said there was blood on the pavement where the fight happened.

Fishwick Parade was blocked off between Dundonald Street and Samuel Street.

Anyone with information should call Preston police on 01772 203203 or Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555111.
